New Jet in pot & gun bust

One of the Jets’ top off-season acquisitions hasn’t even played a down yet — and he’s already flying high.

New Jersey State Police officers arrested running back Mike Goodson early yesterday for allegedly possessing weed and a loaded handgun.

It’s the latest black eye for a floundering franchise still recovering from a humiliating 6-10 season and a rash of longtime ticket holders trying to dump costly personal seat licenses.

An intoxicated Goodson — whom Gang Green inked to a three-year, $6.9 million contract in March — was a passenger in a GMC Yukon that was found stopped around 3:15 a.m. in the left center lane on Route 80 in Denville, NJ.

A tow-truck driver saw the SUV and called 911 “concerned about the condition” of Goodson, said police Lt. Stephen Jones.

Goodson, 25, was taken by ambulance to St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville — but not before cops found the native of Irvington, NJ, had a “small amount of marijuana” on him, Jones said.

State police also arrived at the scene and found the driver, Garant Evans, allegedly intoxicated. They searched the vehicle and uncovered a loaded .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun, hollow-point bullets and some more marijuana.

Goodson was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a loaded handgun and possession of hollow-point bullets.

Hollow-point bullets expand on impact, causing greater damage to victims than conventional bullets.

Evans, 31, of Roseville, NJ, had a prior felony conviction. Besides being hit with the same charges as Goodson, he was slapped with a DWI charge, additional traffic tickets and possession of a weapon with a prior felony conviction.

Goodson and Evans were processed and transported to the state police’s Netcong’s station for processing and then assigned to Morris County Jail. Goodson was being held in the Morris County Jail last night on $50,000 bail, and Evans’ bail was set at $150,000.

Goodson previously played three seasons for the Carolina Panthers and one for the Oakland Raiders. A Jets spokesperson said the team is aware of the situation and “gathering information.”

Under the NFL’s strict disciplinary policy, Goodson could potentially face a suspension.

Three weeks ago, the Jets cut two lesser-known players that they were not as significantly financially invested in — defensive end Claude Davis and cornerback Cliff Harris – after they were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.
