Former Mets star Reyes defends Valdespin

Jordany Valdespin may not have many allies in the Mets organization, but he’s got one with the Blue Jays.

Jose Reyes visited his Blue Jays teammates in The Bronx last night while still rehabbing a severely sprained left ankle and said he was still behind his former protégé Valdespin, who has been at the center of numerous controversies with the Mets — most recently when he flipped his bat after a meaningless home run against the Pirates last week and then reacted angrily when he was hit by a pitch the next day.

“I talk to Valdespin almost every day,” Reyes said. “He’s a very good friend of mine.”

But Reyes declined to delve into the situation with his old team in Queens.

“I don’t know what’s going on over there,” Reyes said. “I don’t want to touch that. Valdespin, I support him in everything he [does] because he’s a good friend of mine. Other than that, I don’t know what’s going on over there.”

Reyes has been rehabbing near his home on Long Island and hopes to be able to run within the next two weeks.

He declined to place a timetable on his return from injury suffered attempting to steal a base on April 13. It was expected to keep him out 1-3 months.

“I don’t want to put any days on it,” Reyes said. “My ankle is feeling a lot better.”
