This week’s couple: Mix and match

If there were a list of first-date fears, suffering an allergy attack would be near the top. But Laethe, 34, says he’s used to them, so when he met Lindsay, 28, at East Village gin bar The Winslow, he wasn’t worried when he had an allergy attack. The OkCupid members, whom we matched with the help of their Crazy Blind Date app, discovered their mixed-race backgrounds made for a great match.

She said:
I’ve never been on a real blind date. Laethe and I are both on OkCupid, but I didn’t know much else about him other than his name.

I always enjoy talking to people who are mixed-race like me, and Laethe is black and white. With our backgrounds, we had similar outlooks on the world.

The Winslow was fantastic. The lamb crumpet, berry shortcake and gin and tonics were the best parts of the meal. Things got a little awkward when he had an allergic reaction to something in the food, but Laethe said he is allergic to everything, so he survived.

Even though I wish Laethe cracked more jokes — since I’m a sucker for witty banter — he seems like a catch. He paints, listens to Adele and he’s a gentleman. We exchang-ed numbers. I’d like to see him again.

He said:
I was excited to be out, but if I wasn’t attracted to Lindsay, I would be deflated. Luckily, she was a cute, fit brunette.

Lindsay sat next to me, which made me happy, but she seemed shy at first.

The Winslow fed us well. We shared the food, including dessert, and tried some different cocktails. As for the allergy attack, I don’t know what caused it, but most of it just leads to congestion, so I knew not to worry.

In the end, Lindsay and I talked for three hours. She’s pretty and interesting; it’s actually the best set-up I’ve been on. I imagine she loosens up as she gets to know someone. I got her phone number and hope to see her again.
