VH1 orders ‘Drumline’ movie with Nick Cannon

VH1 is planning a follow-up to the 2002 film “Drumline” to air on the network this fall.

Original star Nick Cannon will appear in the TV movie, tentatively titled “Drumline: A New Beat,” which will focus on a new set of characters at a fictional New Orleans university.

The story follows an upper class Brooklyn girl who defies her parents’ wishes to attend college in Louisiana so she can join and revitalize its drumline. Her quest to become the drumline’s first female section leader is hampered by upperclassmen, her crush on a fellow band mate and the school’s crosstown rivals.

Cannon, who also hosts “America’s Got Talent” on NBC — and is married to pop superstar Mariah Carey — will serve as executive producer alongside the film’s original producers Wendy Finerman, Jody Gerson and Dallas Austin.

“Drumline,” which was Cannon’s first major film role, co-starred Zoe Saldana and Orlando Jones and earned $56 million at the box office.
