Adorable baby animals

Animal lovers in Austria are flocking to a zoo to see the latest tall attraction - a baby giraffe. Its birth was captured on film as giraffe mum Samira went into labour at the 'Zoo Schmiding' in Krenglbach, in Upper Austria. The pictures show the newborn looking decidely wobbly on its spindly legs trying to take its first steps. The giraffe has not yet been given a name as the sex is yet to be determined. The baby was born after an intense labour for its mother who as is normal was standing. It meant the baby fell from a height of two metres when born. After 20 minutes it was forced to its feet by the mother. "It is important they stand up quickly so they can get mother's milk as they have to reach up 1.7 metres." said zoologist Daniela Artmann. "The baby is healthy and doing well. It is very cute and there is a lot of interest in it from zoo visitors." The average gestation period for giraffe is approximately 464 days. A newborn calf can stand up and run within an hour of being born. Usually only one calf is born although twins have been recorded. The average height at birth is just under 2 metres with a tendency for the females to be very slightly smaller than the males. A newborn calf weighs about 100kg. Newborn calves grow very quickly and can nearly double their height in the first year.

These feathered friends are the latest additions to the penguin enclosure at Vienna's Schoenbrunn Zoo. The magnificent seven Rockhopper penguins were born in mid April and went public only this week in their enclosure in the Austrian capital. Zoo Director Dagmar Schratter said: "The penguins now weigh around 2 kilos. They have their first moulting behind them. Their waterproof feathers are almost completely covering their bodies and they already have their white chests on show. Soon they will be learning to swim." Penguin’s black and white plumage serves as camouflage while swimming. The black plumage on their back is hard to see from above, while the white plumage on their front looks like the sun reflecting off the surface of the water when seen from below. The Rockhopper penguins are endangered in the wild with only around 265,000 pairs thought to exist in the wild. Over the last 37 years the population is thought to have declined by 60 percent mainly due to overfishing of the seas as well as pollution and climate change. Most penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere with the Galapagos Penguin being the only penguin species that ventures north of the equator in the wild. Penguins eat a range of fish and other sea life that they catch underwater and in the zoo as in the wild, spend around half their time in water and the other half on land. (ends)

They are about the size of a small cat and live in extended family groups of around twenty adults plus their offspring. Each group or family sleeps together each night in a communal underground den, changing between den sites every 3-5 days. New York, New York - Saturday June 28, 2014. The San Diego Zoo Safari ParkÂ’s 7-week-old cheetah cub Ruuxa is getting to know his new dog companion as the two continue to bond and spend time at the Safari ParkÂ’s Animal Care Center. The 8-week-old Rhodesian ridgeback puppy was paired with the cub after the cheetah was rejected by his mother and had to be hand raised as an animal ambassador. The cheetah and puppy will be raised together and the dog will serve as a lifelong companion to the cheetah. Safari Park cheetahs selected for training as ambassadors are paired early in life with a domestic dog. As the two companions grow up together, the dogÂ’s body language will communicate to the cheetah that thereÂ’s nothing to fear in new or public surroundings, which relaxes and calms the cheetah. The Safari Park currently has four cheetah ambassadors all of which are trained to participate in the ParkÂ’s Cheetah Run experience. (AP Photo/San Diego Zoo Safari Park)

SHEPTON MALLET, ENGLAND - MARCH 03: Spring lambs belonging to Somerset farmer Ian Merry sleep beside their mother in their enclosure in a building at the Bath and West Showground near Shepton Mallet on March 3, 2014 in Somerset, England. The lamb's mother was originally brought to the Showground as part of a community rescue effort, after the 43-year-old farmer, whose family has farmed for five generations, had to leave his farm near Burrowbridge on the Somerset Levels after it was badly affected by flood water. The Royal Bath and West of England Society has launched a Somerset Farmers' Regeneration Fund to help those affected by the flooding on the Somerset Levels get back on their feet when the water recedes, which is running alongside the Society's Somerset Levels Relief Fund launched six months ago to tackle the long term needs of the area.
