MLB: Rangers’ Darvish flirts with no-no

Yu Darvish was nearly perfect against the Astros, taking a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and striking out a career-high 15 to lead the Rangers to a 2-1 victory last night in Houston for their eighth straight win.

Darvish dominated the Astros until Carlos Corporan lined a home run into the right-field seats with one out in the eighth for Houston’s only hit.

In Minneapolis, Andrew Albers threw a two-hitter in his second career start and the Twins backed him with a pair of home runs to beat the Indians 3-0. … In Toronto, Alberto Callaspo hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the Athletics’ four-run ninth inning, sparking a 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays. … In Chicago, Mat Latos threw eight scoreless innings, and Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer to lead the Reds past the Cubs 2-0. … Also in Chicago, Chris Sale scattered nine hits in his third complete game of the season, and the White Sox topped the Tigers 6-2.

Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is moving on a day after tweeting a fan in San Francisco threw a banana onto the field near him during a game.

“It’s unfortunate that things happen like that, but it ain’t going stop me, myself and the Orioles,” he told reporters last night in Phoenix. “I’ve got a bigger concern in my head than someone’s ignorance or act of whatever. You know what I mean?”

Jones, who is black, homered in the top of the ninth and had four RBIs in the Orioles’ 10-2 win over the Giants on Sunday. He didn’t say anything about the incident after the game, but posted a tweet with an expletive that a fan had thrown a banana onto the field during the ninth inning.

TRACK: Fraser-Pryce rolls in 100m

With her long hot-pink hair slashing in the air behind her, Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce captured the 100 meters at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow yesterday with a winning margin reminiscent of a Usain Bolt victory.

Fraser-Pryce sped to an early lead that kept growing and finished in a world-leading 10.71 seconds. Silver medalist Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast trailed by a massive 0.22 seconds, more than double the previous top margin in 30 years of world championships. Defending champion Carmelita Jeter of the United States took bronze the in 10.94.

The U.S., which leads the medals standings with three gold and six overall after Day 3, got its part of the glory, too, when David Oliver led a 1-2 finish in the 110 hurdles with Ryan Wilson second.

A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press yesterday the Sixers have hired Spurs assistant Brett Brown to be their new head coach, replacing Doug Collins, who resigned in April.

GOLF: Hardy leads U.S. Amateur

Nick Hardy shot a 5-under-par 65 to take an early lead at the U.S. Amateur yesterday in Brookline, Mass. England’s Neil Raymond shot 3-under at the par-70, 7,310-yard Country Club. The event is commemorating the 100th anniversary of Francis Ouimet’s landmark victory in the 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club.

ETC.: IOC rips Russia’s anti-gay law

The Olympic leadership is “cross” with Russia for implementing anti-gay legislation ahead of the Winter Games, a senior IOC official said yesterday, insisting there must be no restrictions on athletes in Sochi next year.

An arraignment on charges of rape will take place Aug. 21 for former Vanderbilt football players Brandon Vandenburg, Cory Batey, Brandon Banks and Jaborian “Tip” McKenzie.
