Target ripped for withholding hack information

After a massive security breach exposed millions of Target customers’ personal information, the retail chain has still not revealed what went wrong or said what it is doing to solve the problem, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.

The personal details from some 40 million Target customers — including hundreds of thousands of people in the New York City area — were leaked in an epic hack of the store’s database last week.

During a press conference Sunday, Schumer called for an investigation and some accountability from the company.

“How can we tell that Target has fixed the problem when they refuse to tell us what the problem actually was?” Schumer fumed.

The senator called on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to conduct a full investigation. In an attempt to save face, Target offered a 10 percent discount to shoppers over the weekend.

In addition to their chain, the breach affected millions of Chase customers who used their cards at Target. Those customers were limited to $100 in ATM withdrawals and $300 in debit-card purchases. Chase opened its banks on Sunday to alleviate the problem.
