Santonio Holmes activated by Jets, could be ready for opener

Tone Time has finally arrived.

The Jets moved top wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the active roster last night from the physically unable to perform list, meaning it is possible he will be ready for the team’s season opener against the Buccaneers on Sept. 8.

Holmes missed all of training camp as he recovered from a Lisfranc injury in his left foot that required two surgeries. Many people around the team felt Holmes was milking the injury to avoid training camp, which ended Thursday. Their suspicions seem justified with Holmes being pronounced healthy a day later. A source told The Post this week Holmes had been cleared to begin practicing, but he told the Jets he was not ready to return.

Holmes, 29, missed all but four games last year. On a team in need of wide receivers, he is an established veteran who can be a game changer if healthy.

It may take a while for Holmes to work himself into being game ready, but coach Rex Ryan has said repeatedly Holmes is in good physical condition. Holmes downplayed how close he was to returning on Wednesday when he spoke to reporters, but it was clear watching him run in the past week he was feeling much better.

On Thursday, he was cutting and planting on the foot and running routes while catching footballs from trainer John Mellody.

* Guard Stephen Peterman is entering his 10th year in the NFL, but he’s trying something new this week.

The Jets have asked Peterman to learn the center position, as they search for an emergency option should starter Nick Mangold get hurt. Peterman has spent the week practicing at center and will play the position with the second team tonight.

Matt Slauson was the backup center the last two years.

Peterman has been grilling Mangold for pointers and working with quarterbacks Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez.

“The biggest thing is just getting the ball there where you’re stepping and stuff,” Peterman said. “I’m sure Nick doesn’t even think about the snap anymore. It’s probably second nature. I just have to get comfortable with that.”

* The Jets waived offensive lineman Scott Wedige to clear a roster spot for tackle Jason Smith, who officially signed yesterday. … The Jets also released wide receiver Marcus Davis with an injury settlement.
