Yankees reliever Logan needed cortisone shot

Boone Logan received a cortisone shot near his left elbow Saturday and hopes it will remove some of the swelling that figures to sideline him at least through most of the four-game series against the Orioles, which begins Monday.

The lefty was relieved to learn he only had inflammation in the area and that “everything is still attached,” but he won’t do any throwing for the next couple of days.

“It’s still sore, but you expect it to be sore the day after the injection,” Logan said.

When asked if he thought he could be back in time for the Yankees’ trip to Boston Friday, Logan said, “That would be nice.”

He added the discomfort is in the same area that gave him trouble during spring training.

In his absence, the inexperienced Cesar Cabral becomes the team’s top lefty out of the bullpen.

Manager Joe Girardi said David Robertson (shoulder tendinitis) will also continue to rest and didn’t rule out a Baltimore return for Robertson.

The injury bug hasn’t been limited to the Yankees’ pitching staff. Chris Stewart may be being forced to sit out with a contusion and strained ligaments to his left foot.

The catcher got X-rays which came back negative after he was hit with a pitch in the third inning of the Yankees’ 4-3 victory over the Red Sox Sunday.

“Hopefully I can go [Monday],” said Stewart, who may have suffered the ligament injury trying to get out of the way of the pitch by Jon Lester. “We’ll see how it is in the morning.”

Stewart broke an 0-for-23 skid with a single in the fifth and later scored before being removed when the pain worsened. He was replaced by Austin Romine and if he is sidelined, rookie J.R. Murphy would become the backup. …

Shawn Kelley reported no problems after pitching a scoreless seventh and believes he can pitch consecutive days after missing a week with triceps tightness.

Girardi said he hasn’t made any changes regarding David Huff’s status as Thursday’s starter against the Orioles, despite the southpaw’s disastrous outing against the Red Sox Saturday.

And Phil Hughes, whose spot Huff took, has not been given any indication he would be placed back in the rotation.

CC Sabathia is scheduled to start Monday night against the Orioles.

Brett Gardner had bad numbers against Lester, so he didn’t start Sunday. He pinch hit to lead off the ninth and struck out.

Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury had the diagnosis of a compression fracture to his right foot confirmed, but he could be back before the end of the regular season.

“We feel like he’ll return this year,” manager John Farrell said. “He’s in a boot right now.”

Clay Buchholz is slated to return to the Red Sox rotation Tuesday against the Rays after being out since June with a strained neck.
