Death on Metro-North causes major delays

A man was struck and killed by a Metro North train at the Hartsdale station in Westchester around 7:55 a.m. Tuesday, stranding commuters all along the Harlem line during rush-hour, officials said.

The unidentified victim was hit near a parking lot just south of the station, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators aren’t sure yet whether he intended to be on the tracks or if it was an accident, authorities said.

Several passengers are stranded inside cars on the train that was scheduled to arrive at Grand Central Station at 8:24 a.m. because the power had to be shut off to both third rails, an MTA spokeswoman said.

“We’re trying to clear up congestion,” she said. “It’s very busy. We’re in the peak of the rush hour.”

The MTA has restored limited service with a shuttle into Grand Central but that hasn’t alleviated delays and overcrowding, authorities said.
