Squatter dies in fire at vacant Long Island house

Suffolk County police say a squatter has died in a fire at a vacant Long Island house.

The fire in Central Islip was reported around 5 a.m. Thursday by a passing motorist.

Responders couldn’t get inside right away because the flames and smoke were so intense. When they did, they found the man’s body in the basement.

It’s not clear how the fire started.

Police say there was no electricity in the house.
