ORLANDO, Fla. — Brendan Ryan is “close” to re-signing with the Yankees, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Post.
Ryan, a high-end defender with feeble offense, would serve as some insurance in case Derek Jeter cannot play shortstop regularly as he attempts to return from his ankle injuries.
The deal was described as “small” and would not deter the Yankees from pursuing a better player who could play shortstop and, perhaps, third base, such as free agents Stephen Drew and Jhonny Peralta. The Yanks are looking to bulk up on the left side of the infield and be protected if Jeter is incapable of playing and Alex Rodriguez’s suspension is upheld.
Ryan, who turns 32 in March, was traded from the Mariners to the Yankees on Sept. 10. In 17 games with the Yanks, he showed his strength (playing spectacular defense) and weakness (producing a .563 OPS).
Among active players with at least 2,500 plate appearances, Ryan’s .619 OPS is third-worst, ahead of only John McDonald (.601) and Cesar Izturis (.614). His .320 slugging percentage is the worst.
