Hagel OK’d to head Defense

WASHINGTON — Former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) is the nation’s new defense secretary after the Senate confirmed him yesterday.

Senators voted 58-41 mostly along party lines to confirm Hagel, whom Republicans opposed, claiming he was soft on Iran, hostile to Israel and unprepared to lead the military.

Four Republicans joined Democrats in voting for Hagel, who succeeds Leon Panetta.
