First image of new ‘Doctor’ in character stirs up Twitter

The first image of new “Doctor Who” star Peter Capaldi in character just hit the web, and the Whoniverse (a.k.a. Twitter) is exploding with opinions on the new Time Lord’s outfit, particularly his choice of Doc Martens for footwear — could they prove as iconic as former star David Tennant’s Converse?

Capaldi, who’ll play the latest incarnation of the time-traveling hero on the BBC’s long-running sci-fi series, is best known for his role as the curse-happy spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the British show “The Thick of It,” and the subsequent film version “In the Loop” (2009).

But the 55-year-old Capaldi’s always been a Whovian at heart — back in the ’70s, he was a contributor to the Doctor Who International Fan Club’s newsletter, and a piece of his fan art from a 1976 edition was recently revealed.
