Crane co-op seeks a ‘stay’

Residents of a Midtown co-op will be in a Manhattan courtroom today seeking an 11th-hour reprieve from their order to evacuate over the weekend so that the neighboring high-rise crane that broke and perilously dangled during Hurricane Sandy can be replaced.

Lawyers for the landmark Alwyn Court at West 58th Street and Seventh Avenue will face off against Extell, developer of the luxurious One57 condo.

The city, the building and the developer haggled over conditions for a forced evacuation scheduled to start today and last through tomorrow but failed to reach an agreement yesterday. Sticking points include reimbursement for accommodations and insurance in case of a second accident, according to an attorney for the Alwyn.

The 72 families claim the city’s Department of Buildings has no authority to push them out while workers install a new 150-foot crane boom atop the 90-story condo.

At “present, there has been no imminent danger, peril or public emergency associated with the crane and boom,” Wednesday’s emergency court petition asserts.

A lawyer for Extell declined to comment. The city’s Law Department did not immediately answer requests for comment.
