INSIDE THE MATCHUPS
YANKEES: Hughes did not make it out of the first inning in his last start, a 10-batter, six-hit, two-walk, seven-run disaster vs. the Mariners at the Stadium. He has generated just three swinging strikes in 134 pitches covering his past two starts. The 26-year-old has a 6.58 ERA and 5.2 Ks per nine innings in six appearances at Camden Yards.
ORIOLES: Gonzalez — who was in line to win the miracle Raul Ibanez two-homer game in last year’s ALDS — is expected to come off the DL after missing time due to a right thumb blister. In his first six starts, he allowed between two and four runs and hurled between 5 1/3 and 6 1/3 innings in each. The mostly fly-ball pitcher has allowed six home runs.
STAT SO?
YANKEES: Speedster Brett Gardner has banged into five double plays through 44 games, one off his career high.
ORIOLES: Lefties were 3-for-30 against reliever Brian Matusz before Travis Hafner’s 10th-inning RBI single.
