NYPD detective busted for allegedly cyber-stalking ex

An NYPD detective was busted by the FBI this morning on charges of cyber-stalking and hacking into the email accounts of his ex-girlfriend — who’s also a cop — and several of their co-workers.

Edwin Vargas, 42, was arrested at his Bronxville home and charged with one count of computer hacking and one count of conspiracy to commit computer hacking.

The cop paid thousands to services that broke into the emails of dozens of people for him – including 20 NYPD employees and one retired cop, according to a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court.

He paid over $4,000 for the login information for 30 people, and then accessed the account of at least one victim, authorities said.

Federal agents found a file on his work computer containing his victims’ email addresses and passwords, among other contact information, according to the complaint.

He also accessed phone records for one person that showed whom they were texting, the complaint charged.

It was part of a scheme that stretched back at least as far as 2010, authorities said.

Vargas also allegedly accessed the FBI’s National Crime Information Center to get personal information about his ex, with whom he has a child, and his other alleged targets.

Vargas is currently assigned to the 40th Precinct in The Bronx after earlier working in the borough’s 44th Precinct.

He’s expected to appear in Manhattan federal court later today.
