Sochi is most dangerous Olympics ever: Congressman

WASHINGTON – The terror threat hanging over the Winter Olympics in Sochi likely will make it the most dangerous Olympics in history, Rep. Peter King warned Sunday.

“The fact is these are going to be very much threatened Olympics. Probably more than any we have had in our past,” declared King (R-LI), chairman of the House Homeland Security subcommittee on counterterrorism.

“Now this is a dangerous situation. Hopefully things will work out, but it’s nowhere near ideal,” King said on ABC’s “This Week.”

A big part of the problem was that the Russians are not sharing enough security information, which compounds the threat from Islamist terrorists in the region, he said.

“This is a dangerous region in Russia by the north Caucuses. There are active terrorist organizations there,” said King. “And quite frankly, the Russians have not been cooperating with us or with other countries anywhere near the extent that, for instance, the Greeks or the Chinese or the Brits did.”

Athletes and spectators headed to Sochi were already rattled by terrorist vowing to strike the Olympics, despite the so-called “ring of steel” security measures set up around the city by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The State Department has issued an advisory for the thousands of Americans expected to attend the games, which start Feb. 7.

The Pentagon also is sending two Navy war ships to the Black Sea as a “prudent precaution” in case Russia needs help with security or to evacuate Americans after an attack.
