Posh ‘NY Athletic’ clubbed by staffers’ suit

The city’s most exclusive athletic club is pinching the paychecks of staffers, two workers claim in a lawsuit.

The labor unrest is the latest woe for the normally staid New York Athletic Club on Central Park South — which was the scene of an uncharacteristic brawl in its Tap Room last spring and is already fighting a sexual-harassment lawsuit.

Local 6, which represents 170 union employees at the elite club, is gearing up for a battle over a contract renewal in October.

The elite club carries a $30,000 initiation fee but is accused in the suit of skimping its staff on everything from $12 overnight meal allowances to $140 uniform compensation.

“Why do we have to fight for what’s in our contract?” one veteran restaurant staffer griped.

The employees asked for anonymity to protect their jobs. One security worker, who spoke out about alleged sexist remarks by managers in the past, says he was docked vacation days, overtime and a bonus.

Club spokesman James O’Brien said, “The reputation of the NYAC has been built by the dedication of its professional staff. We take enormous pride in that. When issues arise, we always work cooperatively and cordially with our employees or with a collective bargaining representative to reach an equitable solution.”
