Silverette strikes Monmouth gold

Silverette took the lead near the stretch and held on to win the $60,000 Red Cross Stakes at Monmouth Park yesterday, beating Angel’s Glory by a length.

Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Paco Lopez, the 4-year-old filly ran the six furlongs over a fast track in 1:09 3/5 and returned $6.80, $3.80 and $2.40. It was the fourth win in eight career starts for Silverette, who has earned $198,802.

Angel’s Glory paid $5.60 and $3.40. Betting favorite Holiday Soiree was a half-length back in third and paid $2.10.

Lopez also captured the co-feature, riding Rusty Slipper to a three-quarter length win in the $60,000 Little Silver Stakes. The 3-year-old covered the mile over a firm turf course in 1:35 1/5 and paid $22.40, $9.80 and $7.60.

Schiaparelli won the $73,710 Great Lady M Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths at Betfair Hollywood Park, giving jockey Joe Talamo his fifth straight stakes victory at the track.

Talamo’s streak began last weekend when he won the Fran’s Valentine, the Marjorie L. Everett Handicap and the Railbird Stakes. He won the American Handicap on Saturday. Schiaparelli ran six furlongs on the turf in 1:08.66 and paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10 as the 3-5 favorite.
