Woman finds razor blade in Burger King cheeseburger

This probably can’t be classified as having it your way.

A woman bit into a cheeseburger at a Burger King in Willits, Calif., a few weeks ago and found a razor blade under the bun, according to a report by ABC News 10.

“I was in shock,” said Yolanda Orozco, 46. “I was just looking at it. Somebody at Burger King was careless.”

The razor blade, which could be bought at any hardware store, was in between the burger and the cheese, Orozco said. Willits cop Mark McNelley took the call and admitted he “thought it was going to be a hoax.”

Police investigated the incident, attempting to determine whether or not the the placement of the sharp blade was intentional, but it was ruled an accident. On a tour of the restaurant, officers found three other razor blades in close proximity to food – above the condiment area, on the counter in front of the burger warming trays and even right above those trays. Employees told Kelley that they were used for cleaning purposes.

The Willits Police Department has handed the investigation off to the Mendocino County Department of Environmental Health. Better training and a better system of tracking and storing the blades is being mandated. Orozco said management has contacted her in an attempt to make things right.

Burger King issued a statement reading: “Food safety is a top priority for Burger King restaurants globally. Burger King Corp. has strict food handling and guest policies and procedures in place that all crew members are required to follow. Franchisees are responsible for implementing these policies and emphasize the proper food safety procedures to all crew members. The franchisee, who independently owns and operates this restaurant, is fully cooperating with the Willits Police Department.”

The corporation did not respond to an inquiry from ABC News 10 regarding whether using razor blades to clean was a typical practice at Burger King locations.
