PBS and Al Jazeera boost nighttime programs

Al Jazeera and PBS are beefing up their prime-time lineups.

Al Jazeera America, which will replace Al Gore’s Current TV Aug. 24, says it will premiere the nightly newsmagazine “America Tonight,” which will be executive-produced by Kim Bondy, who formerly produced CNN’s morning-show coverage.

The newsmag — which will cover the economy, government, education, healthcare and the environment — will air weeknights at 9 p.m.

It does not yet have a premiere airdate.

On-air reporters for “America Tonight” will include Adam May, Lori Jane Gliha and Christof Putzel.

PBS, meanwhile, will add a Saturday-night edition of its weeknight show, “NewsHour,” starting Sept. 7.

The half-hour weekend edition will be anchored by Hari Sreenivasan.

He’s been a “PBS NewsHour” correspondent since 2009 (and is also director of digital partnerships).

The weekend “NewsHour” will be produced at Ch. 13’s Tisch Studios in Manhattan (located at Lincoln Center).
