Google was in mix for WhatsApp buy

CEO Mark Zuckerberg had to act quick on Facebook’s $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp.

That’s because Google’s CEO Larry Page was making a $10 billion offer for the messaging service, according to a Fortune magazine report.

Facebook announced the blockbuster deal on Wednesday, saying that it would pay $19 billion in cash and stock to acquire the WhatsApp messaging service.

The Google bid did not include a board seat for WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum, which Facebook included in its offer, Fortune reported.

WhatsApp with 450 million users has nearly double the number of users as Twitter, according to analysts.
