92nd St. Y boss gets the boot

The longtime executive director of the 92nd Street Y has been axed, along with the woman who served as his liaison to the board of directors — and as his mistress, board officials announced yesterday.

The firings of the married Sol Adler and his paramour, Catherine Marto, after what officials called their “undisclosed long-term personal relationship,” adds a salacious sex-scandal component to a kickback controversy that had already rocked the 92Y and resulted in several firings.

The Y’s troubles started after an anonymous letter alleged that a former manager had demanded and received improper payments from vendors. An internal probe supported the allegation, and uncovered that several others knew about it and failed to act, officials said.

That matter is being investigated by the Manhattan DA’s Office, officials said.

Adler had worked for some 20 years as 92Y’s director, growing its programs and endowments and helping forge it into one of the premier cultural institutions in the country.

Officials had previously announced that he had been on medical leave.

Adler was admitted to the hospital on the very day the board had been set to tell him he was fired; the bad news was delayed until now “out of concern for him and compassion for his family,” the board of directors said in a statement yesterday.

Marto was fired for putting her son-in-law on the payroll as a facilities employee despite his prior felony conviction, the statement said.
