New WTC is finally beaming

Lower Manhattan residents were awestruck Friday night as the bright lights atop 1 World Trade Center were switched on in a test for the first time.

“It’s absolutely amazing, it’s so awesome. This definitely beats out the Empire State Building with the ability to change colors,” said Jeff Blaisdell, 29, who could see the tower’s 300 red, white, and blue LED modules from his Fulton Street apartment. “It reminds me of a lighthouse with the white spotlight on top.”

The Port Authority said the glow can be seen for up to 50 miles.

A committee of skyscraper experts met in Chicago Friday to decide if a design change to the tower’s spire disqualifies the building as the nation’s tallest.
