Ex-coach Billick on Giants: ‘Turnovers are killing them’

Former Ravens coach and FOX analyst Brian Billick talks about the Giants rough start, turnover woes and Rex Ryan with The Post’s Justin Terranova.

Q: Anything in particular trouble you about the Giants 0-2 start?

A: You can’t turn the ball over in this league at that rate and expect to win, and the Giants know that. The difference between the good teams and the bad teams can be minuscule at times. And I am sure there are a number of things that need addressing, but coach Coughlin has to be preaching that every single day in every aspect.

Q: Do you think the Giants are being too cautious with David Wilson over his fumbling issues?

A: It’s not that Wilson isn’t securing the ball and that’s a tough one for a coach and the player. You just can’t continue to cough it up. Sometimes the ball is just going to come out, and you have to be supportive. But it’s very difficult because turnovers are killing them.

Q: And some noted that Wilson look too concerned about not fumbling in the Broncos game?

A: Right, and now it’s a double whammy: You are not running the ball well because you are worried about the turnovers. If it gets into your head to that degree, then you are going to be in tough straits as a running back. You have to get it comfortable in your mind that you are doing the right thing

Q: How do you think Rex Ryan is handling his lame-duck coach status?

A: Every coach is on the hot seat unless your name is Coughlin, (John and Jim) Harbaugh (Bill) Belichick, and Rex knew that going in. Given the circumstances, the team is holding up pretty good. They are going to play good defense and they’ve seen this before with Mark Sanchez, who got them to an AFC Championship as a rookie. They are going to look at that track record.

Q: Your thoughts on the two rookie QBs in the Jets-Bills game?

A: Very impressed with EJ Manuel. He reminds me a little bit of a quarterback I had in Steve McNair — very physical guy, can run around with the ball. He seems poised, taking the team the length of the field to win against the Panthers. And Geno Smith — the thing about a rookie quarterback, does a game look to big for him? And right now it doesn’t.
