The ceremony for Officer Jeff Herman who was shot in Brooklyn while responding to a dispute, was held at Magen David Yeshivah in Gravesend, a school located across the street from a park dedicated to the officer, and where he loved to play baseball with his comrades.

Fellow officers from the 71 pct. where he worked, along with family and friends gathered to honor Officer Herman’s dedication to the force. The school adopted four trees outside the park in Officer Herman’s memory and a book of letters written by 5-8 graders was presented to his mother, Bebe Herman. One letter by 6th grader Sammy Kishk said, “every time I pass the trees I will think of what your son did. You might think your son’s name is ordinary but in my school your son is famous.”

Twenty-five years ago Officer Herman and his partner responded to a 911 call for a dispute between a man and woman. As Herman arrived the man took out a gun and shot the woman in the back, he then opened fire on the officers. Officer Herman was struck in the leg and shoulder and died four days later at Kings County Hospital.

“Twenty five years later, this city is better and our lives have been enriched, but his colleagues, friends, and loved ones, some of whom have joined us today, have suffered his loss,” said Principal Rabbi Alan Berkowitz.

The shooter escaped but committed suicide later when cops tracked him down.

Officer Herman is survived by his wife, Irene Herman, and his son.
