This week’s couple: First impressions

It isn’t right, but few people can avoid judging someone based on his or her profession. When David, a tech entrepreneur, met Rebecca, a babysitter and actress, for sushi at Haru in Gramercy Park, he thought she might be boring and not intelligent. But as the two 27-year-olds got to know each other, David soon found her turning the tables on him.

He said: ♥♥♥
Rebecca is cute and looked like a well-put-together professional, so it caught me off guard when she told me she is a babysitter and actress. I have unfair stereotypes about how interesting and intelligent the average actress is, but as we talked, it became clear Rebecca is interesting and intelligent.

She spent two years with the Peace Corps in Mozambique. Doing something like that requires a lot of courage. I could tell we are different, but we come from similar backgrounds.

After dinner, I walked her to her subway stop. I awkwardly asked if we should exchange numbers. There were no obvious sparks or magic moments, but I had a fun night. I’d give Rebecca another shot to see if there is a connection.

When I met Dave, he struck me as friendly, but I wasn’t attracted to him. Still, I wasn’t going to let that stop me from having fun.

Dave asked good questions and actually listened to my responses. Both of us have traveled extensively in different parts of the developing world, so we shared travel stories. I even opened up about my experiences in Mozambique, which is difficult to do with a stranger.

For dinner, Dave was game to try different things. Haru had good food, and the place was dark and intimate while still being festive.

Dave was a gentleman as he walked me to the train. I gave him my number, but I’m not sure we’ll hang out again. If he initiates it, I might be game.
