2 DOWN, 14 TO GO

JET REPORT CARD

QUARTERBACKS: B

Vinny Testaverde (29-45, 373 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 88.5 rating) was prolific throwing the ball, but he got the team into the end zone only once.

RUNNING BACKS: F

Curtis Martin (10-32 rushing, 2 for minus-2 receiving) is lost in a sea of not enough carries and poor run blocking.

WIDE RECEIVERS: A-

Santana Moss (5-142, 1 TD) had a career game and showed what kind of weapon he can be when they get him the ball, though he did have a couple of drops. Wayne Chrebet (7-69) was effective, too.

TIGHT ENDS: C

Anthony Becht (3-12) had a couple of nice catches, but didn’t do enough in the run blocking game to spring Martin.

OFFENSIVE LINE: D

LT Jason Fabini did a decent job on Miami DE Jason Taylor until being penalized three times late in the game with the Dolphins’ pass rush teeing off on the passing game. Pass protection was again solid, but the run blocking is a mess.

DEFENSIVE LINE: D

DE Shaun Ellis was the best of the group with a sack, forced fumble and five tackles. DE John Abraham (nine tackles) was out of position on several plays, including Jay Fiedler’s bootleg TD run. Overall, there was simply not enough pass rush pressure.

LINEBACKERS: D

Mo Lewis (four quiet tackles) continues to be a non-factor. Sam Cowart led the team with 13 tackles and Marvin Jones had 11, but they were still stung by RB Ricky Williams for 125 yards rushing.

SECONDARY: C

SS Sam Garnes had eight tackles. CB Ray Mickens struggled after he replaced the injured Donnie Abraham. FS Jon McGraw had six tackles. Everyone was hurt by Williams.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C-

The killer was an offside penalty by Michael Bates that cost the Jets seven points. LB Kenyatta Wright had two tackles on KO coverage. Kick coverage held the Dolphins to 19.5 yards on two returns. Moss was a non-factor on punt returns, averaging only four yards. Bates’ only KO return went for 32 yards.

KICKING GAME: B+

K Doug Brien was successful on his only FG attempt of the game, a 30-yarder. P Dan Stryzinski averaged 42 yards gross and net on four punts, forcing three fair catches, which was strong. Brien’s KOs were OK.

COACHING: D

First-half woes have to fall on coaching staff as well as the players. Offensively, the Jets have to commit to the running game and force-feed the ball to Martin.
