WEST VILLAGE MAIN BURSTS

A water-main break in the frigid cold turned a portion of Eighth Avenue in the West Village into a slippery mess yesterday.

The 12-inch main on Jane Street broke at about 12:30 p.m., and the water was shut off by mid-afternoon, said a spokeswoman for the Department of Environmental Protection. The break was caused by cold weather, she said. Eleven nearby buildings lost water service and two blocks of Eighth Avenue were temporarily shut down.
