Hawaii

Spread Record: 4-7

Opening Line: Hawaii -11

Tonight’s game pits a Houston team that has been very public about its desire to prove something against a Hawaii club that, despite being home, likely would rather be almost anywhere else this Christmas.

Earlier this month, Hawaii coach June Jones threatened to keep his team from this game, based on concern over players’ academic eligibility. Then on Tuesday, WAC defensive player of the year Travis LaBoy was ruled ineligible.

Hawaii didn’t play much defense as is, allowing 29 points and 388 yards per game. That should give Houston a chance to “get back on [the radar] and show people where we’re at,” as coach Art Briles has said.

With freshman QB Kevin Kolb running a pass-happy offense he has since high school, the Cougars averaged 33 points per game (same as Hawaii). Houston’s five losses all were to bowl-bound teams.

Hawaii is always tough on the island (6-1 SU this season), yet it’s 1-2 in Christmas Day bowls at home.

Houston’s desire overcomes Hawaii’s disarray.
