Drugs nearly scuttle Stuyvesant HS college trip

Students at elite Stuyvesant HS disrupted a school trip to top upstate colleges — because they were hopped up on drugs.

Three seniors among the 102 embarking on the two-day Nov. 15 bus trip used “illicit drugs” just before boarding — causing one to faint — and nearly spoiled the entire academic expedition, the school newspaper reported.

An ambulance was called to treat the unconscious student — postponing departure by about two hours.

“The delay really killed the mood,” senior Anthony Chernyak told the Stuyvesant Spectator.

Students paid between $160 and $267 each for the whirlwind trip, which was to include stops at Cornell, Vassar, Binghamton, Syracuse, Skidmore and Colgate.

Because of the delay, the Binghamton stop was scratched and the Cornell stay lasted all of 30 minutes.

School officials refused to comment. But the Department of Education confirmed the incident and said that all three were punished.

“The disciplinary code clearly states that drugs are prohibited on all school-related events,” DOE spokeswoman Marge Feinberg said.

The two conscious students admitted their drug use and got “Principal’s Suspensions,” according to the Spectator, while the passed-out student was handed a more-severe “Superintendent’s Suspension.”
