Olympic darling Gabby’s story headed to Lifetime

Lifetime will make a TV movie about the life of Olympic gold medal gymnast Gabby Douglas.

In the project, tentatively titled “The Gabby Douglas Story,” Douglas will be played by Imani Hakim (“Everybody Hates Chris”) and Sydney Mikayla (“Whitney”), who will share the role.

Douglas, 17, overcame huge odds to win two gold medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London — becoming the first African American ever to be named Individual All-Around Champion at the Olympics.

Mikayla will portray Douglas during her childhood, with Hakim playing Douglas as a teenager and young adult.

Douglas herself will also appear in the movie, according to Lifetime, which is producing in conjunction with Sony Pictures Television.

Co-stars will include Regina King (“Southland”) as Douglas’ mother, Natalie, and S. Epatha Merkerson (“Law & Order”) as her grandmother.

The movie is scheduled to premiere next year.
