Bloomberg hails ‘phenomenal’ Rivera

Mayor Bloomberg lifted his hefty political bat in support of The Post’s campaign to re-name a street near Yankee Stadium for “phenomenal” retiring pitcher Mariano Rivera.

But the mayor said Wednesday he would would leave it to the City Council to do the honors because it’s their home turf.

“I am a big Mariano Rivera fan for the record,” said Bloomberg, who has attended Yankee games with his youngest daughter, Georgina.

“He’s had a phenomenal career, it’s really amazing if you take a look at his record. I’ll leave that up to the City Council – I do not want to step on their prerogative. They do the street namings. But this guy certainly deserves our admiration,” the mayor added.

“I mean, he’s a ball player, he provides entertainment for all of us, and it’s been great entertainment through my lifetime watching him pitch. It’s always nice to see somebody that really does something well. I don’t think I’ve ever met him, but from all accounts, people really say he is a great guy as well.”
