Sterling completely botches A-Rod ‘homer’ call

Even by Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling’s standards, this was about as bad as it gets.

Here was the scene: Top of the first inning of Monday night’s 2-0 loss in Toronto, scoreless game, one out, Alex Rodriguez at bat.

Take it away, John:

“Here’s the 2-2 to Alex. Swung on and drilled to deep right-center. That ball is HIGH. It is FAR. It is GONE! Over the right-center-field wall.’’

Ummm. Maybe not.

“Oh, it hit and kicked over.’’

(Long pause)

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I got that all wrong. I got that all wrong. At the wall, Davis made the catch. Honestly, I didn’t think he made it. I thought he gave up on the ball and that’s why I thought it was out. So Davis made a catch against the right center field wall and there are two away.’’

“Boy, he hit a rope, though.’’

That’s baseball, Suzyn.
