This week’s couple: Last legs

Try something new: Always good advice, but especially for those who are single and dating. So we sent John, 25, and Emily 24, out to do exactly that at Malbec and Tango House in Noho. From tasting never-before- sampled seafood delicacies to witnessing a tango performance for the first time, Emily and John came away with some noteworthy debuts. But did they enjoy their date enough to try something new with each other?

He said:

When I arrived, I noticed a gorgeous woman with long, curly red hair. When the hostess said the woman was Emily, I briefly thought she might be too pretty, but she disarmed that notion with her smile and kind eyes. She even brushed aside my brief tardiness.

I was at ease and we seemed to be clicking until the octopus I ordered came. She didn’t want to try it, but I convinced her to take a bite and she thought it was delicious, just like I told her. The tango show was also awesome: The dancers, the live musicians — it was all incredible!

At the end of our date, Emily and I agreed to wait and read what we write in the recaps, to figure out if we’ll go out again. We got along quite well, and there’s enough attraction there — so, for the record, I’m interested!

She said:

John is good-looking, but he was late! Nothing crazy, but late is late. I could tell he wasn’t an experienced dater.

Once we sat down, conversation was open, easy and fun, even when we didn’t agree. But the best part of the date was the venue.

The food at Malbec was unbelievable. John ordered octopus, and encouraged me to try it. It was delicious! And for 75 minutes, I was captivated by the tango show — one of the best live performances I have ever seen.

John didn’t bring any cash, which was a bit amateur. I don’t expect to be paid for, but don’t announce you only have $4 on you. He made an ATM run, and he was slightly embarrassed.

I didn’t feel any physical chemistry, which you can’t plan for — but I am grateful to John for getting me to try octopus.
