Driver says car to blame after falling 50 feet from Cross Bronx

The driver who survived a plunge off the Cross Bronx Expressway blamed his car Tuesday for the terrifying fall.

Carlos Broadbelt, 54, left Jacobi Medical Center one night after he and wife Luz Cruz flew off the highway in their 2007 Toyota Matrix.

Broadbelt said the car’s steering suddenly stopped working.

“The front wheels locked and I couldn’t control the car. It started to pick up speed,” he said. “The car moved to the right and I tried to bring it to the middle but the car didn’t respond.”

“It flipped over and we were upside down and then the car turned right side up and landed straight down,” he added.

Cruz was expected to spend one more night at Jacobi before she’s set for discharge on Wednesday.

“It’s great to be alive,” said Broadbelt, who limped with a cain but otherwise looked fine. “It was scary.”

Asked what he was thinking as his car skidded, and then into midair, Broadbelthe said, “A lot of things go through your mind and nothing goes through your mind. You just hope that it stops. That the car would stop.”

“The guys [witnesses] said [to police], `No he came from there, like Superman,’ ” Broadbelt said. “It was funny something to laugh about.”
