Matt Harvey undergoes Tommy John surgery

Matt Harvey can start looking toward a 2015 return to the Mets after undergoing surgery Tuesday to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Sea Breeze, Fla., the team announced.

Harvey decided this month to go the surgery route after beginning a physical rehab program at the Hospital for Special Surgery. But Harvey opted for the surgery before he could begin a throwing program.

Recovery time for Tommy John surgery is typically 12-15 months, and Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has said he has no illusions Harvey will rejoin the team next season.

With Harvey sidelined, the Mets are expected to pursue a veteran, innings-eater type pitcher to join Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee, Jon Niese and perhaps Jenrry Mejia in the rotation. Alderson remains reluctant to begin the season with a prospect such as Rafael Montero or Noah Syndergaard in the rotation.
