1,000-1 shot Auburn could pay off for 14 people

An absolute shot in the dark could brighten a lot of holidays.

At least 14 people are in line to win 1,000 times their wager if Auburn’s miraculous season ends with a national championship.

After Auburn went 3-9 last season, the Las Vegas Hotel Superbook sold 14 tickets at 1,000-1 in January that the Tigers would win the national title. Now ranked third in the BCS Standings, Auburn’s odds are now down to 5-1, heading into Saturday’s SEC Championship game against Missouri.

“As far as college football goes it’s really rare,” Jeff Sherman, the assistant manager at the LVH Superbook, told Bloomberg News.

Auburn (11-1) suffered its only loss of the season on Sept. 21 against LSU and has since won eight straight games, including its two most recent wins, in which the Tigers won on a Hail Mary against Georgia and then defeated No. 1 Alabama on Saturday with Chris Davis’ 100-yard touchdown return of a missed field.

Auburn is a slight favorite over Missouri, but would likely need No. 1 Florida State or No. 2 Ohio State to lose in its respective conference championship games. The LVH Superbook offered Missouri at 500-1 odds, but only one ticket was sold.

Like Auburn, Missouri could reach the BCS title game with a win and a loss by either of the top two teams.
