IONA GETS HALLOWS’ SOLIVER

Just call it All Hallows North.

Ricky Soliver became the third player from this year’s All Hallows squad – which reached the CHSAA title game – to commit to Iona yesterday. Soliver, who was named to the Post’s All-CHSAA first-team as a senior, averaged 18 points per game for the Gaels.

“I think it’s a great choice for him,” All Hallows head coach John Carey said of Soliver’s decision. The 6-foot-3 guard picked Iona over Fairfield and will join teammates Marvin McCullough and Kiril Wachsmann in New Rochelle. “He’s going to do well there.”

Soliver still needs to raise his SAT score in order to qualify to play at Iona next season. He is scheduled to take the test again on May 4 and, if need be, in June. His lack of a qualifying score may have led to his being under-recruited.

Soliver did receive some interest from schools in better conferences than the MAAC, but Carey said that very few of them followed up.

“I am kind of surprised he didn’t get more calls,” said Carey, who is also coaching Soliver in baseball for the first time this spring. “I don’t know if it was because of his grades, but I wish they had called me. If they had, I could have told them he’d be a great pickup. But I’m glad it worked out for him and Iona.”
