BUILDING ON THE WATERFRONT

Construction will finally get under way this fall on a breathtaking waterfront site in Queens that was once supposed to serve as the Olympic Village for athletes attending the 2012 Games, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

London ended up winning those games — and as a result New York will now get an 11-acre park, an 1,100-seat high school and, eventually, 5,000 apartments on a 30-acre parcel with sweeping views of Midtown.

The site was purchased from the state and the Port Authority for $100 million.
