NUMBER OF ‘DANGEROUS’ NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS FALLS TO 10

The number of city public schools dubbed notoriously dangerous dropped to 10 this year — the lowest number since the guidelines for making the designations were changed in 2005, state officials said.

Eight middle and elementary schools were added to the list this year and two were held over from the year prior.

Just three schools elsewhere in the state earned the “persistently dangerous” moniker — which comes from having two consecutive years of an elevated number of incidents per student.

This year’s reduction came as a result of improvements at 14 city schools — including seven that serve solely special education students, four that are being phased out and one, IS 172 in Harlem, that closed this year.

The number of city schools deemed very violent peeked at 25 in 2007 before dipping to 16 last year and 10 this year.

“We have work to do still but have made great progress thanks to our school leaders and teachers, school safety agents, and of course our students,” said Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg.

Of the 10 dangerous city schools, there are three in Manhattan (JHS 344, PS 63, MS 256), three in The Bronx (IS 229, PS/MS 123, PS 12), two in Brooklyn (PS 231, PS 22), and one each in Queens (JHS 226) and Staten Island (PS 14).
