‘Family’ atmosphere in B’klyn

Bedford Academy HS in Brooklyn has seen only one letter on its three school report cards to date: A.

That’s because the high-poverty school — which serves 97 percent black or Hispanic students in the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant — has been able to maintain an incredible 96 percent graduation rate for the past two years.

“The secret to our success is very simple — good, strong, quality educators,” said Principal Adofo Muhammad, who also teaches two courses at the school.

“Our tutorial services are mandated, and there are a lot of supplementary educational services here,” Muhammad added. “That’s the formula.”

Christopher Kotei, a 17-year-old senior agreed, praising the teachers for being “here before school, after school and on weekends. They are at your disposal.”

Freshman Amanda McMeo also hailed the small school’s nurturing environment. “The way teachers help us, it’s like our own family.”
