Mayor ends DA war

Mayor Bloomberg yesterday declared an end to his war with Manhattan DA Bob Morgenthau over how to split the cash collected by the DA’s office.

“The district attorney said he is going to have the comptroller audit all these [accounts],” the mayor said.

“As long as he’s in compliance with the law, that’s fine with me. We’re certainly not having a battle, shouldn’t be having a battle over anything else . . . That should end all of this.”

Last week, Bloomberg accused Morgenthau of keeping “two sets of books” so he could stash $83 million without the city’s knowledge. The 90-year-old DA replied that the charge was “chickens – -t” and that the city has known for years about his office’s many bank accounts.

One source said that a preliminary review found that 84 percent of accounts under scrutiny represent federal forfeitures or funds being held in escrow.

“The city can’t touch that money,” said the source.
