Woman, grandson run down on Staten Island

A woman was killed and her three-year-old grandson injured today when an SUV jumped the curb on a Staten Island street, running them down.

Beata Kurpiewski, 59, was walking with her grandson Philip, 3, along Slosson Avenue near Windsor Road, in Castleton Corners, about 11:45 a.m. when a Chevy Tahoe collided with a Subaru at the intersection.

The impact sent the Tahoe SUV careening onto the sidewalk, where it plowed into the two pedestrians, before slamming into a pole, said police.

Kurpiewski was walking the boy to St. Teresa’s School, where he was enrolled in the pre-K program, said neighbors.

“I saw two umbrellas lying on the ground and I knew somebody had been hit,” said neighbor Betty Fawcett. “They were giving the boy CPR I saw them huddled around the child.”

Both Kurpiewski and her grandson were taken to Richmond University Medical Center, where she died, police said. The child was listed in stable condition. Both drivers were also hospitalized, police said.
