CC finds flaw in delivery

MINNEAPOLIS — Dave Eiland and CC Sabathia believe the pitching coach has spotted the reason Sabathia was ineffective Sunday night against the Mets at Citi Field.

After watching video of the start in which Eiland was away from the team for his daughter’s confirmation in Florida, Eiland spotted a mechanical flaw.

“He wasn’t getting out over his front side,” Eiland said. “And he was leaving his breaking ball up in the zone, not down to right-handed hitters or away from left-handers.”

Sabathia gave up six runs (five earned) and 10 hits (two homers to Jason Bay) in five innings in the Yankees’ 6-4 loss.

“He said I wasn’t finishing pitches, not getting out over my front knee,” Sabathia said. “It’s something I have done before, and it should be easy to correct in the bullpen.”

According to the pitching coach, Sabathia deleted the flaw in a bullpen session yesterday afternoon at Target Field.

“It went very well,” Eiland said. “He threw 46 pitches and 40 of them hit the spots.”

Watching the video Eiland also saw a tad of hesitancy in Sabathia.

“There were times when he didn’t throw with conviction,” Eiland said. “If you don’t have confidence you aren’t going to make your pitches. I would rather have a guy throw the wrong pitch with conviction than the right pitch without conviction.”

Sabathia is 4-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 10 starts but hasn’t won since May 3 when he beat the Orioles. Since then he is 0-2 with a 5.96 ERA. In 22 2/3 innings he has allowed 27 hits, seven of which have been homers.

One thing Sabathia doesn’t point to is the adjustment he and the other pitchers have had to make throwing regularly to Francisco Cervelli with Jorge Posada on the disabled list with a broken foot.

“He has played a lot and catches well,” Sabathia said of the energetic and still learning Cervelli.
