Report: Giants question new turf; Jets fine with it

Antrel Rolle is afraid of the New Meadowlands Stadium turf.

Two days after Giants teammate Domenik Hixon tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the first football drills on the new field, Rolle told ESPN.com the turf needs to be checked out.

“I don’t know what it was,” the safety said. “My feet were burning at the bottom on the turf. I was slipping on each and every play. It just didn’t feel good to me at all. I can’t lie to you about that. I am not one to really complain or make excuses or anything but they should definitely look into that as far as playing on that field in the future during the season.”

Rolle said he watched Hixon get hurt and told the website: “He didn’t make a cut or anything. It just got caught in the turf.”

Rolle wasn’t the only Giants player to voice concern over the playing surface at the new $1.6 million.

“I thought it was real slippery,” wide receiver Steve Smith said. “We were all slipping and stuff. Hopefully it settles in when more people do stuff on it.”

Jerry Reese said the turf was not to blame for Hixon’s injury.

“It could have happened right here on this grass field,” the GM told The Post.

FieldTurf spokesman Chip Namias said, “Believe me, if they felt the field had anything to do with the injury, they’d be screaming about it.

“It needs a couple of weeks of activity to be broken in, to settle,” Namias said.

Jets players who practiced at the stadium for the first time Wednesday did not express any worry.

“The turf is great,” Mark Sanchez told ESPN.com. “I didn’t have any slippage.”

Bart Scott said, “It’s new turf. It takes a while for this stuff to harden up and mat down. There’s going to be loose rubber until you run over it a couple times. … But you just have to make the adjustment. Early on you may have to go with shorter spikes, and then as it hardens up you can go with longer spikes.

“But I think it’s still top-notch. It’s soft. It’s level. There’s no divots. There’s no seams. You just have to break it in.”
