Flagged-off area to get a flagpole

A cordoned-off area of the Great Lawn at Marine Park has some visitors wondering what’s going on.

“Maybe they’re going to plant a garden,” said Hannah Horn, as she strolled by the aproximately four-foot by four-foot site, which is near Fillmore Avenue and East 32nd Street. “That would be nice.”

That would be nice, but it’s not going to happen.

Instead, the city says it will be installing a new flagpole at the site, which is located directly in front of the new community center currently under construction.

“The pipe is the foundation of a new flagpole that we are installing as part of the community center project,” said Parks Department spokesmand Phil Abramson said.

The flagpole will be completed by the time the community center is up and running, Abramson said. But there’s no telling how long that will take since the center, located next to the park’s bocce courts, is still under being built and the city hasn’t scheduled a grand-opening date for the long-awaited facility.
