Mets close on Molina

The Mets are inching closer to a deal with Bengie Molina.

A baseball source confirmed a report yesterday that indicated the free-agent catcher has backed off the three-year deal he was seeking and is now amenable to a two-year contract.

Molina could sign with the Mets by the end of the week, according to a published report.

ESPN Insider says, “If the negotiations continue to progress, … the Mets could possibly sign him in the next 48 to 72 hours.”

But it remains unknown if GM Omar Minaya is willing to go beyond one year with an option that could be easily attained based on plate appearances — similar to the deal he struck with Jason Bay that includes a fifth-year option.

The 35-year-old Molina has been the Mets’ top target at catcher since the off-season started. He would become the team’s starter, with Omir Santos, Josh Thole and Henry Blanco in the mix for the backup job.

Minaya has been patient, as not to bid against himself in pursuing Molina. There are no other known serious suitors for Molina, who hit .265 with 20 homers and 80 RBIs for the Giants last season.

The Mets are as much interested in Molina for his ability to handle a pitching staff as his offensive capabilities.

⇒ Former Mets outfielder Ryan Church agreed in principle to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million with the Pirates.

The contract also includes another $1.32 million in performance bonuses.

In what rated among the few good moves for the Mets last season, Minaya dealt Church to the Braves for Jeff Francoeur just before the All-Star break. Overall, Church hit .273 with four homers and 40 RBIs.

His deal with the Pirates is contingent upon passing a physical.
