Easier With Practice

Brian Geraghty gives a lightly endearing performance as a vulnerable nerd who falls in love with a girl he knows only via phone sex in “Easier With Practice.”

Geraghty plays Davy, a writer on a book tour in New Mexico when a girl randomly calls his hotel room and quickly gets naughty with him. The two build a surprisingly enduring relationship out of their sex chats and even get to know each other’s deeper yearnings while the writer’s horndog brother (Kel O’Neill) needles him as a female repellent, at least in person.

Geraghty’s wounded-pup appeal keeps the movie alive even as it heads for a dreary, even-more-implausible-than-the-setup third act. Writer-director Kyle Patrick Alvarez, though, usually finds the right tone and appears to have a promising future.
